American Music Awards 2021: Olivia Rodrigo triumphs as “New Artist of the Year”

Last Sunday the 2021 American Music Awards were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, recognizing the most listened to artists and songs of the year that is about to end. Undoubtedly one of the names that has shone the most in 2021 and was an undeniable star of the past AMA’s awards was the young singer Olivia Rodrigo, who at 18 is leading the playlists alongside artists such as Taylor Swift and Dua Lipa.

The resounding success of their debut album “sour” led her to become the most nominated artist at the 2021 American Music Awards, competing in seven different categories. With opponents like BTS and Taylor Swift, Olivia only triumphed in one of the categories in which she was nominated, however this award crowns her as one of the promises of the music industry and the perfect idol to represent Generation Z.

The award that Olivia Rodrigo received was “New Artist of the Year”, and has been received by singers such as Billie Eilish in 2019, Camila Cabello in 2018, Ariana Grande in 2013, Justin Bieber in 2010, or the Jonas Brothers in 2008.

Although Olivia Rodrigo rose to fame since 2019 by starring in the series High School Musical: The Musical, his career took off internationally in early 2021 with the resounding success of “drivers license”, a single that topped the playlists and would become the first single from her debut album. Among the singer’s other musical successes are the songs “deja vu”, “good 4 u” and “jealousy, jealousy”.
