Katharina “Katha” Schulze is in Mamaglück. The 36-year-old gave birth to her first child in June 2021. She has now spoken about how much her life will change as a result. She voluntarily renounces the candidacy, while her friend Danyal Bayaz has taken up a new post. Does a classic division of roles apply to both of them?
Katha Schulze renounces candidacy: “It just doesn’t work”
In an interview with “Zeit”, Katharina Schulze explains: “When the traffic lights come, the Greens will elect a new federal executive.” She was then asked whether she wanted to run for federal chairmanship. But that is out of the question for the Green politician. “It doesn’t work, it just doesn’t work.”
The child’s father is Danyal Bayaz, also a Green politician. A few weeks before their baby was born, he was appointed Minister of Finance by the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann. “That was just the timing now. He was faster there,” says Katha Schulze. She would have liked to take on more political responsibility, but that is currently not feasible.
Danyal Bayaz contradicts Katha Schulze: “I wasn’t faster”
However, Danyal Bayaz disagrees, as he makes clear to “Zeit”. “I wasn’t faster. It was the timing, that’s what I value,” he says. “If I were still in the German Bundestag, we would have moved the center of our life to Berlin in the event of your choice. If six months later the request had come for me to go somewhere else, I would have had to say: It won’t work.”
However, the couple does not see a classic distribution of roles in the style of a working father and caring mother. “If it had been the other way around, if I had now received the request for a ministerial post, I would have expected that he would support it,” says Katha Schulze.
