New courses in data science and cybersecurity with Coursera

The four new specialized programs and the MOOC are 100% virtual and seek to help bridge the gap in digital transformation.

Four new specialized programs (Data science, Cybersecurity, Data analytics in finance and Platforms to process non-traditional data) and an open online course (Process analytics: optimization from data) became part of the virtual education offer that the Faculty of Engineering has on Coursera.

“Uniandes is making steady progress towards its digital university project. With these releases, the Faculty of Engineering It contributes to a robust offer of virtual education made up of 2 master’s degrees, 6 specialized programs and 28 first-level open courses. We hope to become the ally of organizations and professionals who seek to acquire managerial and technical tools in avant-garde topics ”, indicated Rubby Casallas, dean of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of the Andes.

The four of them specialized programs and the new MOOC (Massive, Open and Online Course, for its acronym in English) are 100% in Spanish and are aimed at audiences with varied profiles that have basic knowledge in programming, information technology and management of computing tools. The first ones are made up of three courses each, whose average duration is 4 weeks, and have a certification that costs USD 49. This means that each specialized program can be seen in 3 months or even less, since each person is asynchronous you are free to move at your own pace.

In addition to Vandenbosch and Casallas, the meeting was attended by Raquel Bernal, rector (e) of the University of the Andes, and the four teachers who coordinated the new specialized programs. The latter analyzed, together with the former ICT vice minister María Isabel Mejía, the importance of closing the gap in digital transformation.

At the end of the day, recognition was given to the teams that have participated in the development of these programs and have allowed the University to consolidate its plan to open its educational offerings worldwide through Coursera.

About specialized programs

The courses are taught by full-time professors from the departments of Industrial Engineering and Computer and Systems Engineering, who had the pedagogical, technological and production support of digital content from Connect (Center for Innovation in Technology and Education).

Platforms for processing non-traditional data

This program – coordinated by Professor Claudia Jiménez Guarín, PhD in Computer Science – introduces the infrastructures, technologies and tools to solve problems that involve new non-traditional data (semi-structured, unstructured and georeferenced), so that they are processed efficiently and provide valuable information that allows organizations to stand out in the market. Students will carry out guided practices with new technologies and, based on open data and business questions, will put into practice the concepts seen during the program.

This program offers the fundamentals of information security and network security. Students will be able to perform basic procedures that allow them to identify threats and information vulnerabilities in organizations, as well as implement different controls for the defense of the computer network, the host and the handling of incidents. The program is dictated by Sandra Julieta Rueda, PhD in Computer Science, and may be taken by people with basic knowledge of networks, operating systems and application administration.

Data science

This program allows to know and develop the main technical skills to contribute as a member of a team in a data science project. His courses include basic knowledge in descriptive models based on statistics, predictive models based on machine learning, and techniques for integrating, exploring and preparing data using the Python programming language and data manipulation and analysis libraries. In the program – guided by Professor María del Pilar Villamil, PhD in Systems and Informatics – students will be able to apply what they have learned in real cases in the real estate, environmental and organizational sectors, using data similar to those handled within an organization.

Data Analytics in Finance

Coordinated by Sergio Cabrales, doctor in Administration, this program responds to the rise of organizations to apply data analytics and artificial intelligence tools to their financial data and make decisions that generate value and reduce risk. Created for people interested in the world of investments, this program combines theoretical bases and its application in financial markets: Students explore advanced techniques for estimating expected returns and consider the risks associated with short- and long-term investments. To take it, no basic knowledge or professional experience in the field is required.

MOOC: Process analytics: optimization from data

This online and open course developed by Oscar González, doctor in Sciences and Engineering, It is designed for professionals of any discipline who want to apply mining and process simulation tools to their business strategy.
